Welcome to India! (Day 1)

After two long flights and a brief interlude in Germany, we have finally arrived in India! We began our day at 3am when we landed in the Delhi airport. The dense smog hit us right away and as soon as we stepped out of the airport we were hit with an unexpected rush of cold air. Even though it was 40 degrees and we were all running on very little sleep, we were excited to be here and looking forward to this wonderful experience.

After a few brief hours of sleep, and a welcome introduction with Saima, we headed to the India Habitat Center to meet the Roshni girls and staff. When we arrived we were overwhelmed and honored by all the thought and care that we were greeted with. Each of us received a flower garland and a handmade card. The girls all had been anticipating our arrival and were clearly thrilled to see us; their enthusiasm only added to our excitement. We spent most of the morning getting to know the girls and diving into discussions about the similarities and differences in our cultures. We then had a delicious lunch and parted ways for the day.

The rest of the day was spent sightseeing. We toured the city by bus seeing the President’s house, the India Gate, and the Akshardham temple (the largest temple in the world). Despite the cold weather (and our frozen toes), it was truly an incredible day. We were all in awe of the city and all of the sights we saw.

And now at 7:30 pm most of us are ready to go to sleep, but we are looking forward to tomorrow.
