Volunteer Opportunities with PAHC Resident Services

The Palo Alto Housing Corporation has several volunteer opportunities available.

Opportunity A: Computer Instructor
Motivated older adult computer learners seek a creative and friendly volunteer computer teacher to teach a small group introduction to basic skills class one day per week (1.5 – 2 hours) at our affordable housing site in Palo Alto.

Use our step-by-step curriculum to guide the class through basic navigation of MS Word, Internet and email functions. Help the participants feel less intimidated by technology, which may lead to better connections with family and friends via email and open up a whole new world of Internet information for them!

We are searching for a volunteer that can teach a class for seniors, one weekday morning or afternoon per week. We ask for at least a 12-week commitment to volunteering. Some type of teaching experience is preferred, along with an open-mind and warm and approachable personality. You do not need to be a computer geek, just have basic knowledge of computers, a clear communication style, and desire to help people be empowered to reach their goals! Your students will be a small group (4 people) of older adult beginning computer users. Opportunity B: ESL Teacher
Motivated adult ESL learners seek a creative and friendly volunteer ESL teacher to teach a small group conversation class one day per week (1.5 – 2 hours) at our affordable housing sites in Palo Alto.

We are currently searching for volunteers for the following times:
1.     Tuesday morning, 10:30-noon. Intermediate level class
2.   1 weekday evening, 6:30-8pm.  Intermediate level class
3.   1 weekday evening, 6:30-8pm.  Advanced conversation
4.   1 weekday morning or early afternoon, one-on-one tutor to a beginning level student

We ask for a 6-month commitment to volunteering. Some type of teaching experience is preferred, along with an open-mind and warm and approachable personality. You do not need to speak any language other than English, just a desire to helprecent immigrants to our community express themselves with greater ease andfeel empowered to reach their goals! Your students will be a small group (4-8 people) of high-beginning or intermediate English speakers, ranging in age from 25-70 years old and speak Russian, Spanish or Chinese as their native language.  You will most likely learn as much from them as they will from you!

Opportunity C: Cooking Class Teacher
What healthy recipes can you share that will inspire seniors to get back in the kitchen & improve their nutrition?

We are searching for a Chef Instructor to both entertain and educate our senior residents with simple healthy, low-cost recipes. Many of our residents receive a weekly bag of groceries from a senior nutrition program, yet we see much of these fresh and healthy items go to waste. A typical bag will contain:  Cabbage, carrots, onions, squash, potatoes, bread, fruit, a frozen vegetable, eggs, a bag of rice and an occasional frozen chicken.

The ideal Chef Instructor is cheerful & outgoing, an experienced home cook or professional, patient and able to develop practical recipes for our low-income elderly population. Come to teach once a month in our spacious onsite kitchen, we’ll provide all the supplies & basic equipment.  Exact date and time are flexible.  Please contact Nora Noldon for more information and a volunteer application, nnoldon@paloaltohousingcorp.org

Opportunity D: Tai Chi Teacher (Bilingual: English & Chinese)
We are looking for an experienced, bilingual Tai-Chi instructor who can share the gentle art of Tai Chi with our senior residents.  This is a wonderful opportunity to help elders and learn from them as well, in only one hour per week!

Opportunity E: Kitchen Assistant on November 22nd, 2011
We will be cooking Thanksgiving dinner for about 60 wonderful seniors at the Sheridan Apartments in Palo Alto.  Most of the food will be prepared ahead of time, but a kitchen assistant is needed to set up the steam tables, keep them filled, make salad and help with serving.  This will be about three hours; from 3 to 5pm.  If you are interested, please contact Nora Noldon, Senior Service Coordinator at nnoldon@paloaltohousingcorp.org for a volunteer application.

Opportunity F: Exercise or Yoga Instructor
We are looking for a creative, friendly, energetic exercise instructor to serve a group of self-motivated, adults. This is a wonderful opportunity to help people improve their physical health and develop a healthy life style while bringing energy and vitality in their daily lives. This is particularly rewarding experience because you will be helping population that due financial constraints are not able to access regular health club.

We are looking for a person willing to offer one or two hours of class per week beginning in January 2012. Exact date and time are flexible.  We ask for a 6-month commitment.
