Students Learn About Building Authentic Networks

On Friday, October 1, 2011, we were joined by 6 alumnae who were eager to share their experiences since graduating from Castilleja. They represented a broad range of professions, working at companies including IDEO, Facebook, and SunRun, a company exploring environmental sustainability. The event began with a panel in the Chapel for Juniors and Seniors. The alumni discussed their work experience, and offered insight and advice to our current students about networking and mentoring, encouraging students to reach out to people of interest, and to form meaningful connections. One alum talked about how one connection often leads to another, allowing our personal networks to expand significantly. Another advised students to tap into the Castilleja Alumni Community, and to form connections with the incredible alums who are always eager to help Casti girls.
After the panel, a selection of students joined the alum speakers for a lunch at the Lockey House. Girls asked the speakers about ideas brought up in by the panel and talked with alums about experiences at Castilleja as well as dreams for the future. Students remarked that many of these alums had found professions that seemed so unrelated to their college majors, like Ursula Ringham who majored in International Relations, but found joy in working for Adobe.
This event was not only an opportunity for students to make connections with community members, but also a chance to think about the future. The event represented Castilleja’s motto, “Women Learning, Women Leading,” well by having current women leaders help students learn about what it takes to be successful.
