India Day 5

Yesterday was the day we’d all been waiting for — a visit to the Taj Mahal! The day began early, and we boarding the buses quickly. The 3 hour bus ride to Agra was painless as most of us slept through it, and soon enough we were in the center of Agra, surrounded by the bustle of stray dogs inexplicably wearing sweaters, roaming cows, and cars, taxis, rickshaws, and motorbikes that all refused to stay in their lanes. After a quick stop at the Trident, a nearby hotel, we headed off.

We learned the history of the Taj Mahal, how Shah Jahan, Mughal Emperor, built it for his wife after she died. The group took a collective gasp as we finally caught sight of the Taj Mahal. Camera’s clicked excited as we slowly walked towards the beautiful architecture. While the day was rather foggy, the surrounding fog served only to add a majestic feel to the already fantastic monument. After we had sufficient time to explore the Taj Mahal and take in its beauty and intricate details, we boarding the bus and headed back to the Trident for a delicious buffet lunch.

After lunch, we visited the Red Fort, another magnificent piece of architecture constructed by Shah Jahan. Monkeys roamed free around the ancient palace. After exploration and extensive photo-taking, we were off to the Craft Museum Store, where we grabbed final gifts and souvenirs.

The day concluded with tea at the hotel and a long and sleepy bus ride home as we all digested the wonderful sights we had seen.

Phrases of the Day

“Why doesn’t someone love me enough to build me a Wonder of the World?”

“Main tumse pyar karthee hoon!” (“I love you,” in Hindi. The Roshni girls have been teaching us a few basic phrases which we attempt in our horrible accents)
