Guatemala Day Four

What a delightful day in Antigua!

Yesterday was our most relaxing day so far…but no less productive! We had the pleasure of sleeping in until 8 (quite late by our standards) and enjoyed a great traditional Guatemalan breakfast of beans, eggs, plantains, and fruit in the hotel.

Then we got straight to work. We spent the morning working on our projects that we will present to the Mayaworks weavers and becadas at our fiesta on Saturday. We split into groups to create photo slide shows, short videos, and written excerpts, all reflecting our experiences from the previous days interviewing the weavers and bonding with the becadas. We worked hard with lots of editing and translating, but the finished products look great, and we hope that the women of Mayaworks will enjoy the presentations as much as we enjoyed their stories. And we had it pretty easy…while working we all lounged on the terrace overlooking all of Antigua, listening to music and taking in the view and the sun.

Next we headed out to lunch with our amazing guide (and new best friend) Lucia. We walked to a fun nacho restaurant, had a great time, and ate ourselves into a food coma.

After lunch we took a short bus ride to a coffee farm on the edge of the city. We spent the afternoon and evening at the farm that doubles as a community and cultural center. We took a tour of the farm and learned much about the history of coffee around the world as well as the multiple stages of production. Later, we took tours of the Center’s museums on Mayan musical instruments and textiles.

We ended the day with a great treat. At the center a traditional Mayan band preformed for our group! We sang, danced, (Saloni and Katherine were invited up to dance with one of the performers) and had a great time. After the concert ended, we ate dinner at the Center’s restaurant, and then headed back to the hotel. We hopped in bed right away (or almost)…we have an early morning tomorrow!
